Solid waste is any garbage, sludge from wastewater treatment, or other discarded material including solid, liquid, or gaseous material from industrial, commercial, and residential activities.

Solid wastes include:

  • plastics
  • latex paints
  • scrap metal
  • used oil
  • furniture
  • appliances
  • cans
  • residential garbage
  • commercial garbage
  • construction and demolition debris
  • medical needles

Solid waste material must be disposed of through one of six primary methods. These are Biological reprocessing (also known as Anaerobic digestion or energy recovery), Recycling or reuse, incineration, landfill disposal/burial, deep well injection (not a preferred method), and unfortunately ocean dumping.

Solid waste management run by the government
In Piedmont, California, solid wastes are categorized for collection as such:
Recycling Collection – This category collects recyclable materials. The government does not limit the amount of materials to collect nor does it charge a fee for the collection.
Organics Collection – Organics materials are yard debris, food scraps and food-soiled paper.
Garbage Collection – Garbage is considered non-recyclable, inorganic, non-hazardous waste.
Bulky Waste Collection – Bulky waste collection is free, but is only offered 4 times per year. The size is limited to 20 cubic yards per individual.
If a resident exceeds the annual limit, they must use a commercial junk disposal service such as All American Hauling to dispose their bulk waste.

Frequently included in bulky waste are:

  • Household Hazardous Waste
  • Hazardous wastes are:
  • fluorescent bulbs
  • batteries
  • cleaners, pesticides, fertilizers
  • medical waste
  • paint, thinner, varnish, etc
  • motor oil and filter, batteries and old fuel

Construction and Demolition(C&D) Recycling
Construction and demolition services that have a building permit value of $50,000 or more are required to divert 50% of the debris from going to the landfill.
Other countries use a different method. Most have weekly schedules, alternating the kind of trash they must send for collection every week. Some have required fees for collection. Other countries dump trash in a dump truck without sorting it.
What if we don’t have a solid waste management plan in our location?
Residents can start a solid waste management plan right at home. The most effective and common way to do this is by separating biodegradable from non biodegradables using two trash bins.
Biodegradable materials are those that decompose. Create a compost pit out of it.
Non-biodegradable materials are plastics, bottles (glass and aluminium). Non-biodegradable materials can be dropped off at recycling centers near your community.
All other trash not belonging to this category can be disposed of in community landfills. Call a commercial garbage disposal service for bulky wastes.
To manage waste effectively, use the Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle waste management method.
